Student Council
One aspect of the Loreto
Philosophy is that students are allowed to experience the exercise
of appropriate responsibility.
The Student Council and
the Senior Prefects are examples of how this philosophy is put into
practice in Loreto Bray.
The Student Council was
revived, under the guiding hand of Ms Máirín O'Toole, in1998 after
a lapse of 20 years. The Council is made up of 30 students. A democratically
elected Class Prefect represents each class. The Head Girl and Deputy
Head Girls chair the meetings, with Fourth or Fifth Years acting
as Secretaries.
The Student Council meets
every two weeks and provides a lively forum for discussions covering
such topics as litter, recycling, canteen facilities and uniform.
Each year the Council has
run a Health Awareness campaign. To date it has been involved in
a "No Smoking Campaign", an "Alcohol Abuse Awareness Campaign" and
a "Healthy Eating Campaign". All of these campaigns provided practical
information to the general school community.
The Student Council holds
a collection for charity each year, organizing non-uniform days,
fun events and food collections for Kosovo, Bray Women's Refuge
and St. Vincent de Paul.
In 2000 the Council collaborated
with the Parents' Association in the organization of a Millennium
Time Capsule. This contains an information sheet on every student
in the school in 2000 as well as many other items of memorabilia.
The capsule is to be opened in 2050!
The "Loreto Student" page
in the student Journal was the result of many hours of surveys by
the Student Council.
In conclusion, the Student
Council is an excellent addition to school life in Loreto Bray.
